米国のOpenAI が、中国大陸からの自分たちのサービスへのアクセスを制限しています。理由は諸々ありますけれど、民主主義的に国家が動いていない独裁政権を維持する国家に、AIパワーを利用してほしくないというのが大きな理由です。

とはいえ、すでに大きな工学力を持っている大陸中国ですので、この措置が、むしろ地元のAI企業を元気づけ、開発力を増強させることにつながっているというのでは？という皮肉な結果になっています。

特に、「Lim added that OpenAI’s models tend to align more with Western viewpoints, while Chinese models are tailored to local cultural norms and values.」という事実を考える時、巨大なマーケットを抑えている地元の中国のAI企業が、ローカル環境では一歩先を進んでいる…ということもできるでしょう。

将来的にChatGPTが普通に開放された時、中国は再度ロケットスタートを切れるかもしれませんね。したたかですよ、あの大国は。

OpenAI in the US is restricting the access to their services from mainland China. There are many reasons for this, but the main reason is that they do not want AI power to be used by a nation that maintains a dictatorship that does not operate in democracy.

However, since Mainland China already has a large engineering force, this measure may in fact encourage local AI companies to increase their development capacity. This is an ironic result but probably true.

In particular, consider the quote in the article, “Lim added that OpenAI’s models tend to align more with Western viewpoints, while Chinese models are tailored to local cultural norms and values.” One could argue that the local Chinese AI companies, who have a huge local market under control, are in fact one step ahead in localization.

In the future, when ChatGPT is finally opened up, China may be able to get off to a rocket start again. Hey, that big country is tough.
