So hybrid work reduces productivity… yes or no?|結局、在宅ワークは生産性を落とすの?

Stanford researcher Nicholas Bloom noted that employees who worked from home two days a week had the same level of productivity as their colleagues who went into the office every day.

It’s time for some scientific research to come out. Does working from home really reduce productivity?

What is presented here in the article is a study that was done with a lot of enthusiasm by the researchers of organizational behavior at Stanford University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Peking University, all of which are the world’s leading research and education universities.

The results show much the same trends as the study Microsoft spent money on a few years ago, the subsequent studies conducted by several European universities, and the results of an independent study conducted by a Japanese human resource development firm.

Hybrid work does not reduce productivity, but increases employee satisfaction, and has no major downsides basically, as Stanford researcher Nicholas Bloom noted “that employees who worked from home two days a week had the same level of productivity as their colleagues who went into the office every day.”

In short, working from home about two days a week may be appropriate. However, as the article also points out, many of the subjects in this study were managers in their 30s, and almost all had children. The situation might be different for singles or veteran employees over 55.

Nevertheless, real face-to-face contact is, of course, important.

It’s not necessary to work from home all five days a week. As evidence of this, when too many people work from home, relationships in the office often do not work well, and the result was that the group that came to the office every day had a higher turnover rate after one year, for example. In summary, we need to be creative with WFH.
